Free sexual harassment survivor Amal Fathy

Editing Office - Egypt

Amal Fathy posted a video online, speaking about her experience of sexual harassment and criticizing the Egyptian government for neglecting survivors. Now she’s been sentenced to 2 years in prison for ‘spreading false news’ – and faces further charges. Shortly after posting the video in May 2018, police raided Amal’s home in the middle of the night and detained her, along with her husband and young child. Her family members were released, but Amal remains in prison. She’s been sentenced to two years in prison for publishing a video that includes false news that could harm public peace’ – and still faces further trumped up charges including “broadcasting ideas calling for terrorist acts” and “publishing false news”. Amal’s is one of dozens of others who have been imprisoned merely for sharing their opinions or criticizing the authorities. Dozens of Egyptians – including activists, journalists, politicians, football fans, and artists – have been arrested in the worst crackdown on free expression in recent memory by the Egyptian authorities. A crackdown of this scale has not been seen in decades. Join us, and call on Egyptian President Abdelfatah al-Sisi to release Amal Fathy - immediately and unconditionally - and release all other detainees who have been imprisoned solely for peacefully expressing their opinions or doing their journalistic work.
