Experts demand accountability for Melilla tragedy

While Spain and Morocco have announced that they have opened an investigation into the death of at least 23 people during the attempt of some 2,000 African migrants to enter the Spanish enclave of Melilla in Morocco on June 24, UN independent experts demanded accountability on Monday for this tragedy.

"We note that investigations have been opened and call on Spain and Morocco to take all necessary measures, alongside the European Union and the African Union, to ensure that responsibilities are quickly established, that victims obtain redress and that unlawful deaths do not happen again, in accordance with their obligations,” the experts of the United Nations' International Mechanism of Independent Experts (IIEM), a mechanism responsible for advancing racial justice in the world, said in a statement. the context of law enforcement, and the UN Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent.
